When women give priority to their children sacrificing their careers, they are praised. But when men do the same they become the subject of mockery. Many employers still think that work should come first for men, and women should take all the steps for child care.
Many men get worried for being considered as less masculine if they play an important role in their child’s upbringing. Employers often do not allow men to avail paternity leave every time.
Though men do care for their children but they often fail to show it. Unlike women men do not get praised for taking active part in child-rearing after balancing their work.
Many new fathers do not avail the benefits of paternity leave. How much dads prefer to go in the workplace rather than staying back home to take care of the new born is a big question now-a-days.
Very slow change in the scenario:
Today more dads are choosing to stay at home to take care of their children. The latest reports from the U.S. Census reveal that more than 30% of fathers are found to take care of their children at least once a week in the year 2010. The rate has increased from 26% in the year 2002.
Rules regarding paternity leave:
Paternity leave is the time given to new fathers to support their partner. Under the law, if a person is an employee, he is entitled to either one or two weeks’ leave to take care of the new baby. Paternity leave is in addition to one’s normal holidays.
The right to get paternity leave is available to all eligible employees irrespective of the tenure of their employment.
In Britain an employee who applies for paternity leave is entitled to 20 consecutive weeks of unpaid additional paternity leave starting after the end of the ordinary paternity leave. Ordinary Paternity Leave lasts up to 26 weeks. In case of an adopting parent, the leave extends up to 37 consecutive weeks starting within 52 weeks after the child come s to the parent.
If the child is suffering from such a kind of physical or mental condition which requires an additional parental care, the employee can avail up to an additional 5 weeks of unpaid leave.
To avail the benefits of paternity leave a request for leave has to be given in writing to the employer.
Rules in India:
In India paternity leave is allowed to male Railway employees having less than 2 surviving children.
It is normally allowed for 15 days. It can be availed at any time between 15 days to 6 months after the delivery of the child. But if one does not avail it, the same will be lapsed. Paternity leave is generally not refused.
